Blood+ 49

September 16th, 2006 by Gunlex

I had set really high expectations for many aspects of this episode and it easily surpassed them all. The only issue I had with this episode was how easily Amshel was defeated by Hagi. As cool as their fight looked, Amshel seemed too weak for how strong he had been portrayed ever since we learned about his identity. That may also apply to Diva, but I personally felt there was a logical explanation for her stalemate with Saya. The reasoning also explains why Saya was fine after being impaled by Diva. I could have completely interpreted the whole thing incorrectly if they do come up with another reason in the final episode. Nathan was a unique character from the first moment he was introduced in the series. I thought it was quite interesting to see him not engage in any form of combat in the entire series. He followed his own desires from beginning to end. The episode ends at a really good moment that makes us want to watch more. The latest ending song really does seem to give a lot away, including the fate of Diva’s two daughters. Even though it won’t exactly be surprising to see Saya spare their lives, I’m still extremely anxious to watch the finale.

Ah! My Goddess Sorezore no Tsubasa 22 (Final)

September 15th, 2006 by Gunlex

As far as “Ah! My Goddess” episodes go, I thought this was definately one of the better ones. It even worked well as an ending in my opinion. Albeit it wasn’t a real conclusive ending as expected, I think most viewers should be satisfied with how the writers chose to end the season. Having Hild in the series was one of the best things to happen to the series. Personally I really like her as a character. I’m actually hoping for a third season just so I can see them incorporate her into more stories. This last episode was one of the very few episodes where I didn’t think about Keiichi’s usual uselessness. It wouldn’t have bothered me if they had extended this episode’s story over two episodes. I had a lot of fun watching all the various events that took place in the season finale. For keeping the whole story within one episode, the only minor complaint I had with this episode was the lack of lines for Urd. Other than that I have to say I was pretty satisfied with this final episode.

In terms of overall quality it hasn’t changed much since the first season. We got to meet many more characters in the second season. This was both good and bad for the series in my opinion. On the whole, introducing new recurring characters like Peorth and Hild had a positive impact on the series. By including characters that only appeared for one or two episodes hurt the series. I found that these characters often took center stage, which really takes away an otherwise good opportunity for us to see more character development of the main characters. In retrospect I feel that it was a good idea for me to continue watching this series. By no means was this the best series of the last two seasons, but it had its fair share of memorable moments. If you enjoyed the first season then I would highly recommend taking a look at the second season. For everyone else, if you have other things to watch then you aren’t missing out if you end up having to skip this series. The next two weeks they will be airing episodes 25 and 26 of the first season which have never been aired on TV. If you didn’t get a chance to check them out on the DVD then this is your chance to watch them.

ZEGAPAIN 23

September 15th, 2006 by Gunlex

So as you may have already guessed, the connection at the hotel somehow managed to pull through once again. Lots of big events took place in this episode, including both expected and unexpected ones. We get to meet Shima’s original. For someone who was supposed to be very important he wasn’t in the episode much. He fulfilled his role and that was the end of it. We’ll probably get to see him again at some point in the final episode. Lu Sheng’s affection for Kyo caught me off guard. The thought that he would have feelings for Kyo never crossed my mind. The thing that bothers me isn’t the fact that they are both guys since I have no problem with it, but throwing this thing in out of nowhere at this point in the series felt like a last-minute addition to the story. Anyways, I have no doubt that the last episode will be very entertaining. I really look forward to seeing how they will wrap things up.

Witchblade 23

I was somehow able to get this episode. As for the other reviews that I would normally do, they may just have to wait until I return so stay tuned. I will keep trying to get the other anime I review, but I can’t guarentee anything considering the unpredictability of the hotel Internet connection. This series went by pretty fast in my opinion. We’re already at the episode before the finale. I thought the build-up to the final episode was nicely done. We get more and more indications that Masane is really nearing her limit and her chance of survival is close to zero. The inhabitants of Marry’s Gallery finally learn about Masane and the witchblade. I must say they’re all pretty understanding people to not have any fear towards Masane after seeing something so out of the ordinary. The last episode should be quite action packed with Masane having to deal with the 3800 rogue I-Weapons as well as Maria and Asagi. I’m fairly interested in seeing how the ending will turn out.

Update regarding possible delay of reviews

September 12th, 2006 by Gunlex

As nice as it is to have Internet access in my hotel room, I won’t be able to do any reviews if I can’t access Winny. I can’t even get bittorrent to work so I will have to end up skipping a week’s worth of reviews or actually put the time in to catch up.

Possible delay of reviews for this week

September 11th, 2006 by Gunlex

I am heading out on a business trip starting tomorrow for one week. Depending on how much time I have, I will either delay or completely put the reviews on hold. I’ll definately try to write reviews while I’m away. The reviews may end up 1-2 days late, but if for one reason or another I’m not able to write reviews at all they will resume after I return.

Utawarerumono 24

A couple of things were cleared up in this episode. We finally get to see Camyu’s critical part in the series. It was previously hinted at that she would play an important part eventually. It was kind of surprising to me since I never thought much about the possibilities of what her role would be. We also got some insight into just who Dii is, thanks to Camyu and Urutori. They made it obvious that Genjimaru was about to be killed, but I never thought he would like the way he did. I thought Kuuya’s reaction at seeing Genjimaru die right before her eyes was a nice touch of realism. At the end of the episode we see her in a state of shock while being carried out by Hakuoro. I felt both scenes greatly improved the quality of the episode overall. Although I was somewhat disappointed that they left many things unanswered, I still enjoyed watching this episode. Hopefully they will get around to explaining everything else over the next two episodes.

ARIA The NATURAL 24

September 10th, 2006 by Gunlex

As expected from “ARIA”, this was yet another good episode. We get a better understanding of the responsibilities as well as the ugly side that comes with being an Undine. It was funny to watch Aika, Akari, and Alice try and come up with nicknames for one another. I would have liked to hear them suggest more names for each other. It does make me wonder what nicknames would be appropriate for them. Unsurprisingly, I thought Akira, Athena, and Alicia’s nicknames were really fitting for their characters. This may not have been the first time their nicknames have been mentioned, but it must have been quite a while ago if they had been mentioned previously. We knew from before that Aika has a lot of respect for Akira even if she didn’t outwardly show it, but we get to see just how much she respects her in this episode. They could have pulled this episode off as the last episode of the season with the way they set it up. I felt like it would have been a suitable ending. Of course, I’m glad there are still two more episodes to go though.

School Rumble 2 Gakki 24

September 10th, 2006 by Gunlex

Based on the preview from last week I had high expectations for this episode. It turned out to be only a mediocre episode. With this episode’s premise they could have done a lot more with it. The events in this episode felt a bit too random for the series. I felt like the level of nonsensical spontaneity took away from the episode’s ability to be really funny. This episode did have some scenes which I found humourous, but it could have been a lot better if they had fixed the mistakes that were made. It wasn’t the least entertaining episode of this season, but it’s also far from being the best. Since the season is already nearing the end I really expected more from this series.

Blood+ 48

September 9th, 2006 by Gunlex

Pretty much all Hell broke loose in this episode. The Red Shield weren’t able to stop the live broadcast of Diva’s performance. We get to briefly see the unfortunate consequence of them not being able to stop her. For the second to last episode I was actually expecting a little more excitement. It was by no means a bad episode; I enjoyed watching it. It’s just that I was hoping for more content considering how late in the series we are. This means that they will need to defeat Amshel and Nathan in two episodes. Of course, Nathan may not end up dead by the end of the series since he seems to be the most mysterious of the bunch. All I can say is the next two episodes should be good.
