Ah! My Goddess Sorezore no Tsubasa 22 (Final)

September 15th, 2006 by Gunlex

As far as “Ah! My Goddess” episodes go, I thought this was definately one of the better ones. It even worked well as an ending in my opinion. Albeit it wasn’t a real conclusive ending as expected, I think most viewers should be satisfied with how the writers chose to end the season. Having Hild in the series was one of the best things to happen to the series. Personally I really like her as a character. I’m actually hoping for a third season just so I can see them incorporate her into more stories. This last episode was one of the very few episodes where I didn’t think about Keiichi’s usual uselessness. It wouldn’t have bothered me if they had extended this episode’s story over two episodes. I had a lot of fun watching all the various events that took place in the season finale. For keeping the whole story within one episode, the only minor complaint I had with this episode was the lack of lines for Urd. Other than that I have to say I was pretty satisfied with this final episode.

In terms of overall quality it hasn’t changed much since the first season. We got to meet many more characters in the second season. This was both good and bad for the series in my opinion. On the whole, introducing new recurring characters like Peorth and Hild had a positive impact on the series. By including characters that only appeared for one or two episodes hurt the series. I found that these characters often took center stage, which really takes away an otherwise good opportunity for us to see more character development of the main characters. In retrospect I feel that it was a good idea for me to continue watching this series. By no means was this the best series of the last two seasons, but it had its fair share of memorable moments. If you enjoyed the first season then I would highly recommend taking a look at the second season. For everyone else, if you have other things to watch then you aren’t missing out if you end up having to skip this series. The next two weeks they will be airing episodes 25 and 26 of the first season which have never been aired on TV. If you didn’t get a chance to check them out on the DVD then this is your chance to watch them.

The recent episodes have been quite disappointing. One of the things I found odd about this episode was why Belldandy’s angel had sunglasses on as well. Even though this may not have been the best episode of the season, I still managed to enjoy watching this episode. It’s not everyday we get to see Belldandy try to “misbehave” and cause trouble for others. The next episode is already the finale for the season. 22 is a really odd number to end an anime series, but there you go. It’s almost guarenteed it won’t be a real ending to the series. This is one of those series that can drag on forever without any real resolve. It looks like it’ll be an entertaining episode, but I can’t say I’m dying to see it.

I assumed the story from the previous episode didn’t finish yet, but it turns out I was wrong. The only thing carried over from the previous episode was Belldandy’s one-week suspension. It was somewhat entertaining to see many of the more minor characters all show up in this episode, albeit only very briefly. While Keiichi and Belldandy were discussing things to do together, I thought they would at least come up with something interesting. Unfortunately I felt that everything they did was rather boring. Although I guess this should have been expected considering both of their personalities. The whole episode wasn’t a waste though. There were some parts I enjoyed. Basically all the scenes with Chihiro in them were the ones that caught my attention. We may finally get some sort of continuous story starting from the next episode, which will hopefully last until the end of the series.

Marller is once again up to her usual schemes to cause havok. As far as her previous plans have been, this one was probably the most interesting albeit futile. Of course, since this short story has not concluded yet we don’t really know the full extent of her plans. I didn’t find the whole story involving Kodama and Hikari all that interesting. I couldn’t help but think what role the writers were trying to give these characters. The only part that really caught my attention was at the very end of the episode when Belldandy reads the letter. That should add a whole new twist to the usual pattern. Unfortunately, the next episode is not scheduled to air until August 31st. I don’t see this short story lasting for more than another episode. I hope they don’t try to drag it on either.

We finally get an episode with Urd as the main character. Unfortunately we also meet a new character, Troubadour, who turns out to be one of the least entertaining characters I’ve seen in the series. I found it to be pretty unbelievable that Urd would go out with someone like Troubadour. Even with such an unappealing character like Troubadour, getting to see Urd so much in this episode made up for it. There were a few parts in this episode which I thought were funny. One scene that comes to mind is the bath scene when Belldandy walked in on Keiichi and Urd. I didn’t expect Belldandy to say she would join him if he had asked. This episode starts a new ending song. As far as music for this series, this new ending song is possibly my favourite. The next episode looks like it will shift its focus on Skuld. There’s bound to be some character development so it should be entertaining to watch.

This episode probably belongs in the filler pile. It wasn’t all bad, but it wasn’t a great episode either. We’re introduced to the first president of the automobile club, Fujimi Chihiro. It doesn’t really seem like she will make another appearance this season so overall it doesn’t add anything to the series. It was kind of interesting to see how much respect the others had for her. Chihiro’s race against Keiichi was far from being the most exciting race ever. In the end, the motive for this episode was to help Chihiro solve her own issues. At least the art in this episode was good in my opinion. To make up for this episode, it looks like we may finally be getting an episode dedicated more or less to Urd.

This is the last episode of the Peorth story arc. I thought this was the best episode out of this arc. We find out that Peorth’s real motive for appearing before them was regarding Belldandy. With the way Keiichi and Belldandy are, it’s no surprise their relationship progresses very slowly. Their relationship finally moved one step forward with the help of Peorth. At first I wasn’t a huge fan of Peorth because of her persistance that became borderline irritating. Once we find out Peorth went through with everything just for Belldandy, I’ve come to change my opinion about her. Although if we’re to take into account the possible hints that they’ve provided, this may have turned out to be a favor for Keiichi as well. We’re not even half way through this season yet so I hope we’ll get to see Peorth again.

I found this episode to be the most enjoyable episode out of the three since Peorth’s arrival. After being moved by a shoujo manga, Peorth decides to go on a date with Keiichi. The movie scene was pretty funny in my opinion. I didn’t expect all of them with the exception of Peorth to enjoy the movie so much. Of course, there was also the pool scene. The competition between Peorth and Belldandy was the highlight at the pool. The first task was without a doubt the best one. Although in the end all 3 tasks are pointless to the extent that it becomes funny. If they can continue to keep episodes with Peorth this entertaining then I won’t mind her sticking around at all.

Including a character like Peorth seemed like it would make things that much more interesting considering how different she is from the other characters. Unfortunately, I didn’t think she really improved the quality of the episode. I thought the episode overall wasn’t all that entertaining. It felt like it really lacked any sort of originality. I had hoped for an episode that would make it stand out above the other episodes. At least the art for this episode was fairly consistent. The Peorth story continues into the next episode. Maybe they will keep her in the series until the end of the season afterall. The premise for the next episode sounds more interesting so maybe it will be more enjoyable.

The character many of you have been waiting to see is finally here. Peorth has arrived, at least temporarily, and causes trouble right away. Having her join the cast definately made things more interesting. As nice as it is to have a 4th goddess in the story, I hope she isn’t going to have a recurring for the rest of the series. Adding another character that may potentially stay for the remaining episodes would mean less opportunities for us to see Urd. At the moment we can probably assume her story will wrap up in the next episode. Near the beginning of the episode we got to see a couple of New Year photos. It’s really too bad we didn’t get to see it as an actual episode since it looked like it would have been good. It’s not everyday we get to see Belldandy and Urd wear kimonos.
