Eureka 7 50 (Final)

April 2nd, 2006 by Gunlex

After a year this series has finally come to an end. I hate to admit it, but I’m a bit disappointed with the ending. I thought some parts were just weird. For instance, when we see Nirvash start talking to Renton and Eureka. There were parts of this episode where I couldn’t help but think of Evangelion while watching it. There were some pretty corny parts in this episode as well. The heart with Renton and Eureka’s name on it was really unnecessary I think. It looked a bit too childish to have a big emotional impact. Even though this episode had a fair number of parts I wasn’t so fond of, they still had some good scenes. I liked most of the epilogue with Axel Thurston and the kids. The sign we see briefly as the scene was panning towards the moon was a nice touch. I would have liked to at least see Talho and Holland in the epilogue though. Overall I wouldn’t say this was a terrible ending, but I was expecting something a lot better for this series.

This series is quite a bit longer than your average anime series so the story is pretty elaborate. One of the best things about this series is the level of character development. Looking at how Renton and Eureka were at the beginning and comparing them to the end shows us just how much they have changed. I thought the music for this series was pretty impressive. There were a few memorable tracks, such as “GET IT BY YOUR HANDS”. The art for the series was nice as well, as expected from BONES. For a 50 episode series the animation was kept fairly consistent. Even with a mediocre ending relative to the rest of the series, I still think this is a good series to check out.

Dewey’s plan wasn’t what we thought it would be. I can’t say that I was expecting a twist like this. I thought it came out of nowhere so I’m not particularly blown away by this turn of events. It does make for good entertainment though, I’ll give it that much. Other than that the rest of the episode was good. Every scene with Renton, Eureka, and the kids were pretty emotional. Dewey’s death caused a reaction in Eureka at the end of the episode which prevented them from doing what they originally planned to do. Before this last scene I had an idea of what the last episode would be like, but now I’m pretty clueless. My fingers are crossed in hope that the final episode will live up to the quality of the series.

I think the only suitable word to explain this episode is epic. I’ve always thought Anemone was an interesting character since the beginning. With this episode she’s definately one of my favourites of the series. I was really surprised to hear her narrate her thoughts for a good portion of the episode since it didn’t sound like her usual self at all. It was great to see that Anemone has changed for the better just like Eureka. Some people may think the scene where Dominic and Anemone reunites is corny, but I really liked that scene. For once it’s nice to see Anemone get a break and really find out how she feels. She has quite possibly endured the most pain out of the other characters. Revealing typetheEND’s true form afterwards was significant and very fitting for the scene. I would have never imagined seeing Anemone smile the way she did in this episode. It was without a doubt a very pleasant surprise. Next week will be a one hour special, which means the series will come to a conclusion.

This was a great episode in terms of plot development. There is a lot of new information that really help us answer many of the previously unanswered questions. We learn about the history of the Scab Coral and the consequences of its integration with life on Earth. Although we may not know the absolute origin of the Scab Coral, it was still enough information to let us understand what we need. Now we know why Sakuya and Eureka came to be. I thought it was pretty intense to hear both Eureka and Renton in say the same lines in two separate locations. It definately helps affirm the fact that Renton and Eureka are meant for one another. It also brings about hope that they can bring an end to this conflict. They both know what they have to do now so we can move on towards the conclusion of the series.

Things are really starting to heat up now. Holland and the others are all prepared for the final confrontation with Dewey. With the way things look on paper this will likely be a suicide mission. Of course anime is also known for including miracles so it should be interesting to see how the fight will turn out. Back on Earth we see Eureka and their kids try their best to protect Renton from the storm. Eureka goes through another change and this time we see wings come out her back. Just like Renton, I think it’s a nice look for her. At least it’s more appealing than just the “spots”. The best scene in this episode was when Renton and Eureka leaned their heads together near the end of the episode. That scene was another milestone in their ever-evolving relationship. They finally find the place where they’re supposed to go and they’re greeted by Diana. Now I’m really curious to find out what this is all about.

Holland and the others officially have allies now. The truth written in “Ray=Out” is spreading so we may see more and more people support them. I liked the scene where Dominic was trying so hard to convince Holland his crew to let him fight alongside them. It is the first time we get to hear directly from Dominic how he feels about Anemone. I’m interested in seeing how things will turn out for Anemone since it looks like Dewey still has some use for her. Renton and Eureka don’t seem to be getting any closer to figuring out what they’re supposed to do on Earth. We do get to see Eureka calm down and work things out with the troubled Maurice. I guess you can’t really blame him for the way he feels. After losing his real mother and sensing that Eureka is going to taken away from him too must have been a big blow. I have to give Renton credit for being the one responsible for putting some sense back into Eureka. Renton collapses at the end of the episode. It’s probably nothing more than a fever or something since he seems to be just fine in the preview.

Dominic goes out to find a replacement for Anemone, but once he gets to the lab he finds out how horrific the process is to create someone like Anemone. If Holland continues to take the drugs so he can continue piloting that new LFO, his life may be cut short. At this point it’s quite possible that Holland may not make it through to the end of the series. Things on Earth are going no better. According to where Renton pointed they’re currently somewhere in northwestern Africa. Something’s happening to Eureka and they still have no idea what they’re supposed to be doing. It would be nice if we could find out soon what their purpose for going to Earth is.

There’s a little Easter egg in this episode. Once Eureka unwraps the book you can see the word “bones” towards the bottom of the cover. I just thought that something fun for them to put in. We now know for sure the promised land they’ve been trying to get to is Earth afterall. None of them have the slightest idea of what they’re supposed to do there so it should be interesting to see how they will end up figuring it out. As it turns out, Dewey’s insanity began from childhood. We get to see a scene from his past starting from Holland’s birth. I felt that Anemone was pretty different in tihs episode. It seemed like her behaviour and mannerisms were unusual compared to what we’ve seen up until now.

This is yet another turning point for the series. Holland pulled off some pretty sweet manuevers in this episode, but I didn’t think he would lose to Anemone so quickly. Although Talho’s speech wasn’t exactly anything new as far as entertainment dialogue goes, I thought it was a pretty intense scene. Renton and Eureka were finally able to pass the zone and they end up above what appears to Earth. That last scene definately caught me by surprise. Anemono wasn’t able to pass the zone, but it looks like Dewey has something set up already. Now I’m pretty anxious to see what happens.

You can always count on “Eureka 7″ to provide top notch story-telling. A few questions we’ve had get answered in this episode along with some new information that adds more depth to the story. Sakuya wasn’t anything like I had expected in terms of personality. I really enjoyed Norubu and Sakuya’s flashback. I thought it was pretty well-written, especially for a flashback that involves two individuals who can be considered pretty much minor characters in the series. We finally get to see Eureka’s new long overdue hair style. For the moment it doesn’t look as good as it first did in the earlier portion of the series, but it may just take some time for it to grow on me.
