Fate/stay night 24 (Final)

June 16th, 2006 by Gunlex

So this series has finally come to an end. I do not know whether or not this ending would satisfy the people who have played the game. Having not played the game myself, however, I was pretty content with the ending. It wasn’t the best ending I’ve ever seen, but I still found it to be a nice way to end the series. We get to see Saber use Avalon, which allowed her to protect herself from Gilgamesh’s attacks. I thought Gilgamesh and Saber’s fight scene was well done. It was entertaining to watch from beginning to end. I didn’t expect all that much from Shirou and Kotomine’s fight, but it turned out better than I had anticipated. It would have been nice if Saber was able to stay with Shirou, but it was never meant to be. I liked Saber and Shirou’s final scene together because the music fit the scene so well. It was also the first and last time we get to hear from Saber that she loves him. As for the rest of the epilogue on Shirou’s side, we get to see that things are now back to the way they were and everyone is moving on happily. I didn’t find that part to be all that great, but it was still worthwhile to watch. The epilogue for Saber on the other hand was awesome in my opinion. Whether or not it’s a happy ending is up to the viewer.

This series would probably go on the list for series I would recommend to everyone, as long as they can handle the sight of a small amount of blood. I really liked the colours used for the series. I’m a big fan of the character designs as well. The BGM’s for this series was just unbelievable. It was definately a series with one of the top soundtracks in my opinion. What made this series stand out the most was the incredible seiyuu cast. Pretty much all of the seiyuu’s in this series are well-known. They all did a great job with their characters. The only big issue I had with this series was how it was kind of hard to follow at first for people who did not have any background information when first watching. Other than that I thought this was a pretty fantastic series.

It’s now official, Kotomine has to die. Death is too lenient of a punishment for someone who nearly killed Rin. On the bright side, it’s good they didn’t let Rin die or else it would have been an outrage. Kotomine’s plan all along was to sacrifice Illya. At least that solves the mystery of what signifinace she had left in the story. As expected, both Saber and Shirou appear to be in a losing battle against Gilgamesh and Kotomine respectively. With the way things are going right now, Saber won’t be able to stay with Shirou in the end. Of course, Shirou does have one final seal left to use. There’s only one episode left in the series. The preview appears to give much of the ending away, but I still look forward to it nevertheless.

This episode provides a lot of information that answers many questions from before. We now know what really caused the fire 10 years ago. From the previous episode I assumed that Kirei was Lancer’s master. I wasn’t sure how that was possible based on the information we’ve had up to that point, but they answered that question as well. It wasn’t too surprising that Lancer and Gilgamesh ended up interfering with one another. It was inevitable with the way the scene was building up. Saber explains to Shirou how Excalibur’s sheath ended up within him. Personally, I really liked that scene. Most of my questions have been answered so now I can just enjoy the last two episodes without wondering if they will fill in plot holes. In the beginning of the episode, Rin briefly mentions Illya’s fever is getting worse. I completely overlooked how it may play a role in story until I saw the preview. I really didn’t think Illya would be a part of the story anymore.

If only every episode of this series could be this good I would have rated this series a lot higher.  We learn the identity of the gold armor-wearing Archer.  The thought that he is Gilgamesh from the “Epic of Gilgamesh” never crossed my mind even when he used “Gate of Babylon”.  I’ve got to hand it to Shirou though, he stepped up to the plate and took charge for once.  Pretty much up to this point in the series he has been pretty useless.  This episode reaffirms the idea that Shirou and Saber belong together after we find out that he is her sheath, as odd as that may seem.  I’ve never seen him act so smooth either.  Take the scene where he was teaching Saber how to prepare the daikon for example.  I wouldn’t have expected him to teach her like that.  I was actually a bit disappointed with their kiss scene actually.  For something so significant I thought they could have done a better job with that scene.  Every now and then throughout this series I have been wondering what happened to Lancer.  At the end of the episode we finally get to find out who Lancer’s master is.  There are only 3 episodes left and I expect big things from these last 3 episodes.  If the remaining episodes are as good, if not better than this episode then I will quite satisfied with the series.

This was a good breather episode after all the excitement from the last few weeks. It’s the first time we got to see Rin laugh so hard. I couldn’t help but laugh along since Shirou telling her that he was going to go on a date with Saber just sounded so unnatural. The date itself was pretty entertaining. Seeing Saber get so absorbed in the “Star Wars” inspired movie was unexpected. The episode was moving along too smoothly without any sort of incident. I was just waiting for something to happen when all of a sudden Shirou and Saber got into an argument. Things cooled down between the two towards the end of the episode. I thought that would have been the end of the episode, but along comes Archer to spoil the mood. Based on the preview for the next episode, things are going to get pretty crazy. We’ll probably start feeling the build-up to the climax of the series in the next or two.

This episode already wraps up the whole ordeal with Caster. I didn’t think they would finish this part of the story so soon. I definately wasn’t expecting the events that took place in this episode. Both Assassin and Caster get defeated. It felt kind of random to suddenly see Archer from the previous war just show up. His appearance took me by complete surprise. We get to see just how powerful he is when he easily kills Caster. Saber was able to answer a lot of the questions his sudden appearance brought up, but some key things remain a mystery for the moment. We also find out that Shirou’s adoptive father was Saber’s master in the previous war. I never thought about who her master could have been 10 years ago since it never occurred to me it would be so significant. I enjoy plot twists as much as the next person, but I hope they get around to answering at least some of the new questions this episode brought forth in the next episode.

The episode started with Caster thinking about her past as well as the night she met Kuzuki. It shows us how their current relationship developed. Shirou and the others attempt to rescue Sakura pretty much at the start of the episode. It definately wasn’t the most exciting episode to date, but it had its moments. For one thing, Sakura’s outfit in this episode was pretty awesome. No complaints from me on her outfit. We see a few flashback scenes between Sakura and Rin, but they don’t reveal that much information if you came into this series with no prior knowledge. I don’t expect every episode to top the previous one, but I do hope the next few episodes don’t continue to drop in entertainment value.

This episode answers a lot of the questions regarding Assassin and Caster we’ve had before. We learn who Caster’s master is and also how a servant can be the master of another servant. I was surprised that Kuzuki was so powerful. With those kind of skills it looked like he could even stand up to Berserker. Illya reveals that Caster’s real identity is Medea. Some of you may know her from Greek mythology. It’s good to see that Sakura is back in the story. I was expecting Caster to do something with Sakura based on the end of the previous episode, but I didn’t think it would end up like this at all. The last few episodes have all been good. Hopefully they can keep up with this trend.

This looks like the last time we’ll see Beserker. I really didn’t think he would be defeated this episode considering how strong he is. It was nice to see Shirou actually be useful for once. Until now I think he has been pretty useless and only ended up interfering. Something else I didn’t expect was to see Shirou take Illya into his home. This was probably the first episode where we got to see Saber show signs of jealousy. I found it to be pretty entertaining since it’s really unlike the Saber we’ve come to know. It looks like Sakura is about to play a role soon. It has been quite a long time since we had any extended scenes with her. I look forward to seeing her again.

If there were no indications that this was based on a H-game previously, that changed with this episode. There’s nothing hotter than seeing Rin and Saber in such suggestive poses. Besides that though, we see a big change in Saber. When we first met her she didn’t really show any sort of emotion. Now she seems to be showing many more emotions, making her appear more human. There’s just something nice about seeing Saber blush. She wasn’t self-concious at all when Shirou saw her naked earlier in the series, but now she is embarassed to let Shirou see her in a partly unbuttoned shirt. I hope they keep up with the character development. Saber ends up fighting Beserker again and we see that she’s still not match for him. We do learn that Beserker needs to be killed 7 more times before he can be defeated. That’s all nice information and whatnot, but for now I just hope Rin will be ok after we see her get caught by Beserker.
