Kage Kara Mamoru! 11 & 12 (Final)

March 26th, 2006 by Gunlex

After being fairly disappointed by the recent episodes I didn’t have high expectations for the last two episodes. To my surprise I found myself enjoying them quite a bit. One of the big reasons why I liked these final two episodes was because we got to see actual development of the relationship between Yuna and Mamoru. Yuna behaved quite differently than her usual clueless-self. it was nice to see just how much Yuna cared for Mamoru. Just seeing this whole new side of Yuna made me enjoy the final two episodes. Being that this isn’t supposed to be a very serious series by any stretch of the imagination, Yuna conveniently slips and ends up forgetting the events from the last two episodes. With this kind of series a different ending would have been unconventional. I would personally have liked to see their relationship flourish instead of having everything revert back to the way it was.

It was probably a good thing this series was only 12 episodes and not 24 episodes. There really is no “plot” to the series so it never really went anywhere. Without a character like Yuna I probably would not have watched beyond the first episode. Before watching the final two episodes I would have said to avoid this series. Now that I’ve finished the series I think it may be worth watching for some people. It’s an easy series to watch. Thus, if you want to watch something to help you relax or possibly provide a laugh or two then “Kage Kara Mamoru!” may be a series to consider. Well one things is certain, I will miss Yuna. Bye bye, Yuna (this was the title of episode 11 so I thought it would be a fitting way to wrap this series up).

I thought the premise for this episode had some potential to be preetty funny. Some scenes were decent, but overall I thought the humour was too overdone. The running gags got old pretty fast. I thought they could have used more irony in this episode. It would have made this episode more enjoyable. The part I liked best was when Yuna shows up some time after the maze collapses. Finding out that Yuna had fallen asleep in the washroom and wasn’t in any danger the entire time was pretty funny. It fit really well because it’s only something Yuna could have pulled off. The more I watch this the more I’m reminded of the demographic this series is aimed at. Next week two episodes will air, which means next week will be the finale. To be honest I’m kind of glad next week will be the end since the last few episodes haven’t been all that great.

I thought this episode was pretty disappointing overall. It’s totally understandable that this is not supposed to be a serious series by any means. I think putting aliens in this series is crossing the line. I may have looked beyond this fact if it was actually a funny episode. Not only was this episode not funny, it made even less sense. The only part I enjoyed in this episode was the last scene. It’s a common misunderstanding scenario, but I thought it was at least entertaining. The other reason why this scene was my favourite was because I knew I didn’t have to watch anymore of this episode. If you watch this series, avoid this episode like the plague.

“Kage Kara Mamoru!” did not air last week. That’s why the review for episode 8 is a week late. What surprised me the most at the beginning was finding out that Airi is filthy rich. It was pretty unexpected because she gave no signs of it in her pervious apperances. Their first few attempts at humour early on wasn’t successful. Luckily things changed when Yuna heard about the robbery. Her responses are so atypical that it makes her hilarious. There were some other scenes that I found to be pretty funny as well. I didn’t think Mamoru’s mother would tell him to sneak into Airi’s residence again for revenge. This was pretty much another filler episode except we now know for sure that Airi likes Mamoru as well.

This was not exactly the funniest episode, but I thought it was still quite entertaining. I thought it was fun to see a young Mamoru and Yuna. Yuna as a child was just as clueless as she is now, which I found to be pretty hilarious. We get to see why Mamoru becomes determined to protect Yuna regardless of his familial duties. Things in the present have definately become more lively now with all these new people in their lives. They can probably come up with some highly-entertaining episodes with all these varied characters, but it would be nice to know if this series is really going to go anywhere in terms of the plot.

The cast got bigger yet again. We get to meet Hotaru who happens to be another ninja. Considering Yuna is one of the main characters she wasn’t in this episode much at all. For the last little while she hasn’t really had that many scenes. I still can’t really say what I think of Hotaru as a character just yet. Her role was more on the “serious” side this time. It looks like she will be in the next episode so I will have to wait until then to get a better idea on whether or not I like her as a character.

Catch that panty thief! That’s basically the premise of this episode. While it had some decent scenes here and there, I found myself tuning out from time to time during this episode. There were a few more hints that indicate how Yuna feels about Mamoru. Although I could be wrong since Yuna is quite “special”. She’s the only one that could mix up 2 o’clock in the afternoon with 2 o’clock in the morning. I don’t think it’s necessarily a bad thing either. In fact, I think it makes the series that much more fun to watch since you never know what Yuna is going to say or do next.

This episode is the kind of episode I have been expecting from this series. I find it hilarious just to see Yuna do what she does best; being a total ditz. For the audition to become an idol Yuna sings her original song. It was a horrible song, but it was meant to be so that’s what made it funny. Towards the end of the episode we see that Yuna is going to become an idol after getting selected by Zunku. This was a parody based on “Tsunku” of course, the person responsible for creating “Hello! Project”. It would have been funny for them to run with the parody a little longer, but we only get to see him for that one short scene. In the end Yuna declines the offer to become an idol and we’re back to square one, ready for more wacky adventures.

A new character is introduced in this episode. Yamame is a ninja from Mamoru’s mother’s village. Luckily the kind of humour that was in episode 1 is back. Things will be ok as long as they don’t give us another episode like episode 2. We learn that Mamoru was traumatized as a child and is now terrified of bears. Seeing Mamoru like that reminds me of Ranma and his fear of cats. I do hope they stop using the same villain over and over again, it’s starting to get old. Based solely on the first 3 episodes, this series doesn’t seem as good as “Dokkoida?!”. Since one of the creators of that series is the creator for this series I was expecting a similar level of humour. I’ll just have to keep watching and hope it can become comparable to “Dokkoida?!?”.

We learn why Mamoru’s family has protected Yuna’s family for 400 years in this episode. It’s a silly reason, but that’s what makes this series funny. We meet Tsubaki in this episode. For now I’m not really fond of her. I don’t find her particularly funny or anything. What we need more of is Yuna. I think Yuna’s hilarious because she’s a total ditz and utterly clueless about everything. At this point I don’t know if the series will have an actual plot. With these kind of ‘alter-ego’ series, it’s quite possible Yuna will eventually find out about Mamoru and his family’s secret. For now I just hope the other episodes from now on will be better than this one.
