Magikano 13 (Final)

March 29th, 2006 by Gunlex

We finally find out just who Hongou-sensei is. I wasn’t expecting anything like this at all. Pretty much everything is revealed in this final episode. As far as endings go this series definately had a unique ending. I can’t say I liked the ending though. In a way it makes everything feel hopless and meaningless. They’re all stuck repeating the same year over and over again. They tried to make it look like a happy ending, but in reality it’s kind of depressing. For a series that attempted to maintain a certain level of humour, they clearly failed with the finale. If this was for another series I may have appreciated the serious atmosphere, but I didn’t think this ending was suitable for this series. This last episode didn’t put me to sleep or anything, it’s just that the seriousness of it takes away from what “Magikano” was all about.

The series may not have the best art ever, but it’s decent enough so one can watch this series without having it interfere with one’s enjoyment. I found the animation to be fairly consistent throughout the series so that’s always nice to see. The voice acting wasn’t superb in my opinion. I don’t think they made the best choices for the seiyuu cast as well. Overall this series wasn’t horrible. I do wish they had focused more on the humour aspect though. When they did try to focus on the humour I think they were able to come up with some pretty funny material. If you can stand some mediocre episodes just so you can see some pretty hilarious ones then you might want to check this series out. If you want a comedy series that is good from the beginning to the end then you can overlook this series.

I’m glad this episode was fun to watch since this is the second to last episode. I thought there were some pretty funny scenes. Yuri’s fantasy scenes are always good for a laugh because you clearly see the difference in tatemai and honne (Goggle the terms if you are unsure). To top things off, we get a decent amount of development as well. The truth behind Haruo is revealed and it seems like only a few people knew the truth. Rika ends up saving the girls just in time. From the looks of it either Rika is just extremly powerful to begin with or the girls are just extremely weak. I guess it isn’t really of any signifiance at this point. It’s a bit unfortunate they didn’t introduce Michiru earlier in the series. I would have liked more backstory on her. Hopefully the final episode won’t be a complete disappointment.

I was expecting something better for a Christmas episode. They had so much to work with, but they didn’t take advantage of the opportunity. Relative to the other episodes, however, it’s definately not the worst one. I still thought this episode had its moments. One particular instance that comes to mind is when Maika, Yuri, and Masuzu were fantasizing about spending Christmas with Haruo. Out of the three I probably enjoyed Masuzu’s fantasy the most. We get a look inside her “home”, which was sad and funny at the same time. The relationship between Ayumi and Haruo really wasn’t going anywhere until this episode. All in all, this episode was still worth watching because of the plot development towards the end.

This episode took me by surprise. There is no question that this was the best episode of the series thus far. Simply put, this episode was hilarious. The brief Razor Ramon HG parody was funny and fitting at the same time. A pair of talking panties, now that was just comedy waiting to happen. One of the best parts was when the panty said, “Transform! Eiffel Tower!”. It’s up to the viewer to picture it of course, but it’s not hard to imagine what it would look like. The scene following right after that was pretty hilarious as well with the unconcious Haruo’s hand up her skirt when Maika walks in. To top it all off, we get a bit of suggestive yuri as well. It was a bit too short in my opinion, but I still enjoyed that short intimate scene between the three of them. If only the other episodes were of this quality I could see it being one of my favourites of the most recent anime season.

I can’t say I was all that entertained by this episode. On the one hand the humour was lacking, but on the other hand we get some plot development. If it wasn’t for actual plot development this would have been an episode worth passing on. So we learn why Ayumi’s sister, Mirchiru, is so keen on preventing her sister from breaking the curse. It’s not a unique reason by any stretch of the imagination, but it does make sense why she would do this to her sister. We also see that Haruo indeed does have dormant magical powers. From what we could see it looked pretty powerful. The last thing worth mentioning is Hongou-sensei. It seems pretty obvious that she knew all about Ayumi and the others, but we knew nothing besides that. It seems like she does have pretty powerful magic as well to be able to turn back time.

It’s episodes like this one that make this series worth my time. I thought a decent number of scenes in this episode were funny. One particular scene that comes to mind is when they were fantasizing what it would be like to be the MVP and receive a kiss from Haruo. I found it pretty funny to see how their image of Haruo is different from the way he really is. This is the first time we see Ayumi’s sister trying to interfere with Ayumi’s goal. We don’t know why she is trying to stop her sister though. We might get an answer in the next episode because it looks like Ayumi’s sister is going to be a part of it.

As far as entertainment value goes this episode is about the same as the previous ones. They introduce a new character in this episode. We get just what we need, another maid. I guess Ayumi doesn’t really count as a real maid. Rika’s personality is pretty much the stereotypical maid you see in anime, quiet and emotionally flat. There really isn’t any progression with the story either. For a series like this I guess that is to be expected. I’m all for entertaining episodes without earth-shattering plot twists for this genre, but I would like to see the series headed somewhere instead of just introducing more and more characters.

A series like this wouldn’t have been complete without the coveted swimsuit episode. I actually thought they did a good thing by not taking advantage of this opportunity to flood us with too much unnecessary fan service. As entertaining as the jiggle-factor normally is for most of the anime series of this genre, I watch this series for its style of humour (yes, I know, I’m not fooling anyone). This is the first time we get definitive proof of the power laying dormant in Haruo. It looks like we can now rule out the idea that Haruo having unawakened magical powers is just a misunderstanding. The humour in this episode was more visually-based than the previous episodes. I didn’t find much of the dialogue itself all that funny. Nevertheless, this episode still had its moments that were worth a few chuckles.

For me, this episode was probably the most humourous one yet. I thought Masuzu, the witch hunter, was an alright character. She had some decently funny scenes. The girls seem to complement each other nicely, which makes the comedic scenes work well in my opinion. I enjoyed most of the scenes in this episode; from Masuzu’s misunderstanding to the girls’ bento fiasco. It seems like the teacher knows all about Ayumi and the others so things will get more interesting when she comes into play.

This episode pretty much dove right into the plot of the episode when the girls’ underwear along with Ayumi’s pendant got stolen. With a premise like that I was hoping for some funny scenes to follow suit. There were humourous scenes here and there, but they weren’t exactly anything to rave about. That was untill we got closer to the end of the episode. Late in the episode we see 9 Peeping Toms which looked pretty funny. The best part was the “leader” of the bunch who was blatantly a parody of Jyaian from “Doraemon”. Seeing that part made this episode totally worth watching for me. I can only hope they will include more parodies in future episodes. There is some actual development as well. We see two brand new characters, but they pretty much only had one line each. By watching the preview for episode 5 we do find out that one of the new characters is a witch hunter.
