School Rumble 2 Gakki 26 (Final)

To be honest I didn’t think I would like this episode very much. As it turns out I ended up enjoying it quite a bit. It definately wasn’t comedy-heavy like the majority of the other episodes. We get a better understanding of Yakumo’s relationship with Tenma through a flashback to their childhoods. I thought Tenma looked extremely cute when she was little. She may have caused a lot of trouble, but she always had good intentions. It seemed like the series would be greatly affected when Tenma figured out Harima was the “pervert” during junior high. All thanks to a convenient accident Tenma ends up forgetting it so things are pretty much back to the way they were. Normally I wouldn’t like a quick-fix solution, but it’s really suitable for “School Rumble”. It’s just too bad that they focused most of this episode on Yakumo, Tenma, and Harima. They barely had enough room to even let Eri make an appearance. As unfortunate as that was, it turned out to be a decent way to wrap the second term up. We finish the series with the gang starting their third term.

Overall I think this series had less drama and more humour than the first season. Personally I thought this season was better than the first. Not every episode turned out great, but a good number of them were. Relative to the first season, both the art and music remained similar in terms of quality. It’s not a bad thing since I thought the art was fine since the first season. The music may not be fantastic, but it doesn’t affect the series much. There was a decent amount of character development this season. By the end, however, we don’t see much progress for the key relationships. The series will definately continue in one form or another. Hopefully it will be another 26 episode season, but it may turn out to be just an ova series as well. Either way I look forward to seeing more “School Rumble”. If you enjoyed the first season then there’s little reason not to watch this season as well.

This episode had both humour and angst. There have always been hints that Yakumo likes Harima, but they never took the concept far until this episode. It’s clear that Tenma doesn’t have any sort of affection for Harima so there’s really no way for it to end the way Harima wants it to. Harima doesn’t appear to have any feelings for Yakumo so I can’t see anything long term developing there either. Although I enjoyed this episode, I’m now more confused than entertained. My biggest question for the ending is what are they going to do with Eri. I kind of doubt this would really be the “end” of the “School Rumble” series since there’s still so much potential left with the other characters. I was kind of hoping for a comedy-focused finale, but it doesn’t seem like that will be the case.

Based on the preview from last week I had high expectations for this episode. It turned out to be only a mediocre episode. With this episode’s premise they could have done a lot more with it. The events in this episode felt a bit too random for the series. I felt like the level of nonsensical spontaneity took away from the episode’s ability to be really funny. This episode did have some scenes which I found humourous, but it could have been a lot better if they had fixed the mistakes that were made. It wasn’t the least entertaining episode of this season, but it’s also far from being the best. Since the season is already nearing the end I really expected more from this series.

I don’t really have anything to complain about for this episode. I was very pleased with what it had to offer. The first short story had some pretty hilarious scenes in it. From Tenma’s heart-felt scene with the scale to her unexpected talent, it was pure entertainment from start to finish. Who would have thought that Tenma would actually be good at something. I have to say that I probably enjoyed the second mini-episode the most out of the three. I would have never guessed Lala would want to take up ice skating. When one thinks of the grace in figure skating, Lala isn’t exactly the first person to come to mind. Imadori’s sinister laugh cracked me up, especially knowning it was to humiliate Lala. Although the third mini-episode wasn’t as good as the other two in my opinion, I still enjoyed watching it. They just need to keep up this level of quality for the remaining 3 episodes then I’ll be extremely happy with this series.

I had fairly high expectations for their New Years episode. Luckily I wasn’t disappointed by what they had to offer. I thought there were lots of good parts from the beginning until the end. The episode begins with one of its longest introductions yet. It’s another “Initial D” parody, which I don’t think they have done since the first episode of season one. As for development, I guess one can interpret the events as somewhat developing the key relationships further. Of course, it just isn’t a “School Rumble” episode without their style of comedy. There wasn’t any particular scene which I felt was extremely funny, but the many moments of moderate humour adds up.

I can’t think of a “School Rumble” episode that was as random as this one. Besides the characters there was nothing else relating it to the rest of the regular episodes. Similar to the previous episode, this one was split into two very distinct stories. The first one was a pretty good parody-filled vignette. The parodies ranged from “Doraemon” to a mix of your generic mahou shoujo series with “Card Captor Sakura”. If I’m not mistaken, the very beginning of this episode was a parody of “Sazae-san”. At first I wasn’t sure if the episode would be any good with such a minor character as the lead, but I was pleasantly surprised by what they presented. There were lots of hilarious lines in the first story. The second story is based on the basketball manga we have previously seen. I thoroughly enjoyed itthe first time around but this time I wasn’t nearly as impressed. Regardless of the second story’s inability to be funny, I felt the first story made up for the second.

This episode was split into 3 distinct short stories. The first two stories had some meaningful development. After focusing on the main characters over the last few episodes we get to see them devote entire stories to some of the other characters. I didn’t find the second story all that great. It wasn’t very fitting for the series in my opinion. The other problem with it is simply the fact that we haven’t been given the opportunity to become attached to those characters for us to fully appreciate that story. The last story in this episode was a completely random episode that fits in no particular part of the actual series. That didn’t bother me at all though since I found it to be written in the true “School Rumble” style. Overall I definately liked Karen and Imadori’s story the best. We got to see their relationship flourish somewhat and to top it off it was hilarious as well.

I realize there are 6 episodes of this series I have not reviewed thus far. As much as I would like to review each and every episode of this, I’m far too lazy to write a total of 7 reviews for one series just to be up to date. The level of drama in the series seems to have increased dramatically lately. I still found it to be entertaining and meaningful as it actually created some development in many of the characters. It did feel a little odd seeing Tenma act so serious for an extended period of time. I didn’t think Harima could really embrace Tenma like that considering his behaviour around her in the past. Even though this episode was primarily drama-driven from beginning to end, it was still very worthwhile to watch. We’ll be getting two back-to-back episodes next week. The next review in line is “ARIA The NATURAL” episode 20. Something extra will be included in that review.

There is a combination of both humour and a feeling of apprehension in this episode. The dream sequence in the beginning of the episode was probably my favourite part. Tenma’s dream sequence isn’t all that funny by itself, but once you take into account just what type of character she really is then you can really appreciate the comedy. The second half of the episode wasn’t as good in terms of humour, but it was still entertaining nonetheless. I was wondering what Harima was going to do to get out of their financial situation at the restaurant until we heard Eri’s voice. I don’t think any Eri fan can watch the last minute or two without feeling somewhat sorry for her.

We get very 3 distinct stories in this episode. The first two had some pretty funny scenes, but the third story didn’t have any sort of humour until the final scene. It wasn’t necessarily a bad story, it’s just not something I want to see in “School Rumble” since I’m purely watching it for the comedy. I thought Hanai was great in both the first and second short stories. Watching him try to feed Yakumo was simply priceless. Harima and Tenma talking about pork broth right in front of Napolean was pretty funny too. I didn’t think Harima would so easily agree with Tenma based on how we’ve seen him treat his “pets” in the first season. Overall I thought it was a decent episode.
