School Rumble 2 Gakki 10

This episode was kind of all over the place, but it was hilarious. Harima and Hanai end up losing all of their classmates to class 2-D. Seeing Akira and Eri treat Harima and Hanai like slaves for what they did was highly entertaining. The “Ghost” parody in this episode was unexpected. Since it’s a movie from 1990 many people may not catch that parody. It wasn’t my favourite part of the episode, but it was still funny. I didn’t find the curry scene to be all that great, but it had its moments. We get to see how Lala ends up with the hairstyle from the opening song. Her short story at the end of the episode was pretty random. Regardless, I found it to be a really fun scene to watch.

I was expecting a good episode to compensate for last week’s, but this far exceeded all my expectations. This episode was just filled with hilarious moments. I loved the part where the Outlaws reenacted the scene from the “Hanchakke Basuke” manga from the previous episode. Seeing the characters play those roles cracked me up. Lala’s scenes with Imadori’s shoes were funny as well. I thought it was pretty hilarious to just see her take his shoes and end up completely demolishing them. We got to see a softer side of Lala, something I thought I’d never see. The “Saint Seiya” parody took me by surprise too. Some of Tae’s poses were just like Athena from the original series in the 80’s. Another scene that I thought worked really well was when Tae called upon their “ace” and we see Tenma happily switch sides. It was just like Tenma to go through with something like that. This is definately what other “School Rumble” episodes should be like.

Mikoto and Tenma along with a few others join a newly formed basketball club.  As far as humour is concerned, the episode doesn’t live up to the level of humour I have come to expect from the “School Rumble” series.  There were a few lines that were pretty funny, but overall it just wasn’t what I was hoping for.  This episode does a pretty good job of building up to next week’s episode though.  Tenma’s enthusiasm to play basketball had comedy written all over it.  We’ll get to see Tenma’s team play Mikoto’s team in the next episode, which should be good.  There’s lots of potential there for good comedy.  If all goes well it should make up for this episode’s lack of humour.

I thought the first half was already decently funny with its somewhat random moments. The characters’ imagination sequences that motive them to do something have almost always been funny. During the food-tasting portion of the episode the girls had reactions that resembled those seen in “Yakitate!! Japan”. Albeit they weren’t exactly the same in terms of the level of exaggeration, but the similarities were definately there. Even though the first half had it’s moments, it wasn’t anywhere as good as the second half in my opinion. We get to see clips of most of the characters at their part-time jobs. Some of those scenes were pretty hilarious. One thing I would have liked to see was what happened inside the anime studio that Harima went to. But then again, by not showing what happened was the only way his last scene would have worked.

We now move onto the second and last day of the cultural festival. I was glad to see that this episode was better than I had thought it would be. I had pretty high expectations coming into this episode too. They pretty much included everything I wanted, lots of humour and Eri. There were quite a few surprises in this episode that really livened things up. I thought they did a great job in choosing the cast for their play. The only thing I thought this episode was missing was the lack of lines for Tenma. The dance scene at the end had some funny moments, but without question the best part was seeing Yakumo and Eri together. It’s not exactly ‘quality’ dancing, but it’s not everyday we get to see Yakumo and Eri so intimate.

Although this was a funny episode, I don’t think it was as good as last week’s episode. The two biggeest flaws were the lack of Eri and Itoko scenes. It’s not everyday you get to see Itoko dressed up like that. I had high expectations for the cultural festival. It had a lot of potential to be really funny, but they didn’t make use of every opportunity. One scene that comes to mind is Hanai’s attempt to attract more customers. They could have really added in a lot more humour if they had expanded on it. Regardless, it was still well worth my time to watch this episode. I may not get the funniest episodes all the time with other great comedy series this season, but I can always count on this series to be entertaining.

Now this was the kind of episode I have been expecting from this series. This is by far the best episode out of these first 4 episodes. All the “short stories” in this episode were great. I wish they had shown us a few more of those. I at least wanted to see Tenma’s story as well. Out of the ones they did show however, the “Glass Mask” parody was probably my favourite. Eri had a decent amount of scenes in this episode too, which I thought was great. I just love seeing scenes between Eri and Harima since they’re always so funny. Even though the “short stories” were good, the scene when they went to the bath house was the most hilarious. The long-awaited cutlural festival begins next week so I hope it will at least be as funny as this episode.

So this episode concludes the survival game. It wasn’t as humourous as I would have expected, but I still enjoyed watching this episode. I was hoping to see more of the main characters, but instead a good portion of it was spent on Hanai. I think he can be pretty funny too, but since the first episode we haven’t seen all that much of Eri, Tenma, Mikoto, and Akira. I liked how they resolved the issue of what to do for the cultural festival. Combining the two ideas is bound to be packed full of hilarity. I’m sort of glad the survival game is over. Now we can move onto what will most likely be a lot more humourous than the last few episodes.

The survival game begins! Although it was pretty funny, I was kind of expecting more humour than what was in this episode. That’s not to say I didn’t like this episode. It’s definately still worth watching. One of my favourite scenes was seeing “Eri” at the end of the episode. The game continues in the next episode so hopefully it will have more humour. Even if it doesn’t I’ll still enjoy it. I’m pretty fond of the type of comedy used in the series. It was just too bad we didn’t get to see much of Tenma in this episode. I don’t think she had more than 2 to 3 different lines. I don’t dislike the new seiyuu for Karen, but when I hear her speak I’m reminded of Yurie from “Kamichu!”.

I haven’t come to a final decision on what to label this series as. The other choices I have been thinking of are “School Rumble Ni Gakki” and “School Rumble Second Term”. For now I will just use “School Rumble 2 Gakki”. When the first season ended I was hoping we would get another season. It was a long wait, but season two is finally here. The story continues right where we left off from the OVA. It was nice to see all the characters once again. I’ve missed the crazy antics that are such a defining part of the series. I just don’t get tired of all the misunderstandings in this series that is pretty much the driving force behind a good portion of the humour. I’m not sure if this series is really worth picking up on for those people who did not watch the first season. It may still be entertaining but much of the humour may be missed due to the lack of previous knowledge from the first season.
