Sousei no Aquarion 26 (Final)

September 26th, 2005 by Gunlex

The ending was a lot better than I had anticipated. At first it didn’t seem like it would turn out all that well, but I was wrong. It’s a very Aquarion-esque ending with effects that would seem completely bizarre to people who have not watched the entire series. I had a different ending in my head, but I felt this ending was very well done. Sure it’s a theme we’ve all seen before, but it doesn’t take away from the fact that this was a good ending. Playing “First love Final love” without vocals was a great idea. It fit perfectly with the final scene.

This series had its share of misses just like many others. I think the ending makes up for a lot of it. This wasn’t your typical mecha series. It was unique in the fact that the story is told differently than the usual. The music was one of the stand-out features of this series. Breakthrough artist AKINO gave us catchy songs and Yoko Kanno provided us with great BGMs like always. I wouldn’t recommend this series to only mecha fans. Its originality allows it to be enjoyed by a wider variety of audiences.

The mass-produced Aquarions were almost completely wiped out within the first few minutes. Glen was finally able to regain his self-awareness, but ended up blowing himself up not long after. I was kind of disappointed. I would have liked to see him survive till at least the last episode. Although it wasn’t really elaborated on, we learn about Fudou’s real identity. That answers the question of how he knew pretty much everything. Probably the most significant part of this episode is the death of Sirius. It was only a matter of time. Before his death he learns about his past life from 12000 years ago. He must have felt pretty stupid then.

This episode is the launching pad towards the final battle. Pretty much from the beginning of this episode we see Apollo as a different person. He still has some of his ‘primal’ characteristics, but he seems a lot more mature than before. He, dare I say, seems civilized. I’m all for Tsugumi making good use out of her ability, but the excessive usage of hearts was highly distracting in my opinion. It was nice to see Jerome take charge and for once oppose the military. Then we find out the military only used Aquarion so they could get to Atlantia. Whether or not this was Jerome’s plan all along, we may not find out. Frankly it isn’t all that crucial at this point, but I’d like to believe he really did oppose the military without any knowledge of their plan.

I wasn’t expecting an episode of this calibur so soon. We’re told the truth behind Silvia and Sirius’ identity. Now everything is slowly coming together. From the way it looks Sirius has completely changed sides. It’s probably just a matter of time before he bites the dust. Undeniably the biggest part of this episode was the appearance of a second Aquarion piloted by Glenn. I’m looking forward to see how this all plays out.

With a big episode like last week’s, I wasn’t expecting another one so soon. This time the primary focus is on Sirius. The turn of events in this episode was a surprise to me. I didn’t think Sirius would go along with the “Da-tenshi’s”. This will hopefully make the last 5 episodes that much more interesting. I thought some of the sword fighting sequences were pretty cool. I was hoping the fight against Touma would have lasted longer. With Sirius’ departure, I don’t know what will become of him now. Also, since he took Vector Mars with him how will the others fight. Things will probably get pretty messy from here on out.

It looks like the horrible art was just a one time thing. Things are looking good again. There were more decent shots of Silvia in this one than usual. I didn’t expect them to kill the Da-tenshi they captured. But because of that things are heating up and it looks like they may try to get the rest of the story in over the last 6 episodes. I’m not sure how great of an ending it can be with only a few episodes left. There are still lots of unanswered questions for the allotted time remaining.

This episode takes the award for weirdest episode and worst art. I can understand that they intentionally made the art horrible for the duration they were being influenced by the Da-tenshi. The characters during the pool scene in the beginning was inexcusable. The characters looked so bad that they weren’t that recognizable. There were only a very few select parts where I thought the animation was acceptable. I can’t say that I really enjoyed this episode. The art just threw me off from the beginning.

There’s a new opening song for the series now. It strikes me as odd considering it’s well over half-way through the series already. Maybe it’ll actually be more than the previously assumed 26 episode length. I think the song itself is pretty decent. Once again it’s by Akino, whom I think did a good job on the first opening. As for the episode itself, I thought it was pretty funny seeing the characters cosplay as one another. Rena’s cosplay was by far the most “interesting”. Instead of the second ending song we’ve been getting for the last few weeks, we get a piano version of the first opening song.

This week the girls try dieting with catatrophic consequences. I thought it was pretty funny seeing them go through with the dieting and end up dreaming about food. It’s nothing more than another filler episode though. With that said, I must say I think this is still one of the better filler episodes for the series. Apparently Rena has more hidden powers than what we saw in the previous episode. Not only is she a teleporting vampire, she can also make plants grow. (;´д⊂)

This was quite possibly one of my favorite Aquarion episodes so far. We finally learn stuff about Reena. I was surprised to see that in some scenes she didn’t look scary, but decent. Silvia should keep her hair down for the rest of the series. Her normal hair style looks like ass. I thought how most of the characters in this episode getting freaked out by vampires was pretty entertaining. If only the series could keep up this kind of entertainment value, it would be a great series.
